During one of our last fish sampling in a seagrass meadow, we unfortunately collected a pregnant pipefish. The offspring (47 tiny pipefish) was almost ready to be released. Pipefish are rather common inhabiting seagrasses, yet these guys are hard to spot while diving there.
On another subject, we’ve recently tested the acclimation potential of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa and the green algae Caulerpa prolifera to new light scenarios by transplanting vegetative fragments from deep areas (ca. 20 m) to shallow areas (5m) and vice versa (see a photograph from a shallow-water transplant). A range of responses will be measured in the lab via several techniques (pigments, phenols, etc.), so we can work out responses.
