The value of seagrass meadows

We all are aware of the crucial role seagrass meadows play in the marine environment. Economic valorization of ecosystems, particularly of some functions and services they deliver, is somehow a way to promote the social perception of the key role that seagrass meadows, or whatever habitat, may play and, therefore, the necessity of incorporating seagrasses into conservation legislative frameworks. In a recent paper, we determined the economic value of our beloved Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows for local fisheries at Gran Canaria, by taking a two-step approach. First, we considered the value of the fishable fraction on a per area basis, and secondly, we evaluated its nursery role as a place where a range of fish species do recruit on a per area and time basis.
